In 1980 Werner Blaser launched the Basel Architecture Lectures series and since 2005 his son Christian W. Blaser has assumed responsibility for continuing the program. Renowned international architects are invited regularly to Basel to provide a broad public with insights into their work. Previous lecturers have included, e.g., Tadao Ando, Roger Diener, Aldo van Eyck, Sir Norman Foster, Frank O. Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Jacques Herzog, Herman Hertzberger, Helmut Jahn, Renzo Piano, Alvaro Siza, Livio Vacchini and many more.
Ever since 2000 there have been three events that take place annually in late summer. The basic idea of the series is to raise and discuss interdisciplinary concerns. Each event features an architect together with a representative of a related field. The ensuing dialogue results in an encounter between architecture and such fields as city development, urban planning, art, structural engineering, building technology, façade planning or landscape architecture.
Architecture Days was launched in 2000 as a cross-border program of events in Alsace /FR and Baden-Württemberg /DE of the Upper Rhine region. Due to the initiative of Architektur Dialoge Basel the program has been conducted trinationally since 2008 with the additional participation of Switzerland. 160 events for over 40'000 visitors bring built architecture, its concerns and key players closer to a broad public.
Since 2003 the Agenda at www.architekturdialoge.ch has been providing information about the rich variety of architectural events in the Basel region including an email periodical newsletter. This service facilitates dialogue between trade unions, non-profit organizations, governmental authorities, institutions and the interested public.
